Decoy Lake path diversion and out of hours access

The diversion route around the construction site at Decoy Lake Field is now going to be staying open after further discussion with the contractor and them seeing the amount of visitor traffic using the path on week days. Health and safety remain a prime concern, so please do as directed by the construction workers if they ask you to move, or if they have to temporarily have to close the path during delivery by large trucks. There may be some short term closures (during peak activity), you will be advised by YWT staff of this on entry to the site, and we ask that you do not hang around the edge of the construction site, but instead have a quick look and carry on further onto the nature reserve.

The out of hours exit gates cannot be used during this period. Visitors must be off site before the reserve closes at 5pm.

Diversion Update (Friday 30th) - the diversion path has re-opened

Moth Trapping Report for Monday night, 12th September

The one and only highlight of Monday night’s trapping was another new species for the reserve.  Nomophila noctuella is a long and narrow-winged, light brown Pyralid, not unlike a caddis fly in appearance. It is, however, a migratory moth, originating in Southern Europe and North Africa and will have come to Potteric with the strong southerly airstream that currently exists. Numbers at coastal reserves, such as Spurn, can be quite high in these conditions but far fewer tend to reach this far inland.

Nomophila noctuella brings the total of new species this year, so far, to 17.

Following a very warm night, there was no shortage of moths (or wasps!) in the trap on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, the moths nearly all fell into the category “common”! For example, they included 21 Large Yellow Underwing, 17 Square-spot Rustic and 16 Setaceous Hebrew Character.

Acleris emergana , Ypsolopha parenthesella and Hypatima rhomboidella were newly recorded for 2016. Other species worth noting included Maiden’s Blush, Treble-bar and Svennson’s Copper Underwing.
