Moth Trapping Report for Tuesday Night, 28th March

A total of 18 species were identified, including the following additions to the 2017 list:
Early Tooth-striped, Purple Thorn, Early Thorn, Brindled Beauty, Red Chestnut, Early Grey and an incredibly early V-Pug, a species which is not normally seen before May. A few moths of the genus Eriocrania were also trapped but are awaiting identification. Eriocrania are tiny, metallic purple or purple and gold moths that fly in the early spring. They all look incredibly similar and are difficult to identify, even with genitalia dissection.

Moth Trapping Report for Monday Night, 13th March

A total of 12 species were trapped, mostly repeats of species recorded at Friday night's trapping session. However, one additional species, and certainly the best record for the night, was a single Lead-coloured Drab, a moth first recorded at Potteric Carr only last year. This one is fairly widespread but very thinly distributed across the Yorkshire region.

Other recent Potteric Carr moth records

  • A single Diurnea fagella , a common late winter/early spring species, was spotted on a tree trunk on Rossington Bank on 14th March.
  • A common member of the Tineidae family, also known as "clothes moths",  Monopis laevigella , was bred from the contents of an owl box on 15th March.
