Viewing Screen at Carr Lodge

A new screen is now open to the public on Carr Lodge nature reserve (adjacent to Potteric Carr, the other side of White Rose Way). It was built by the volunteers and trainees at Potteric, and has a good view north west over the wet grassland and area that is often inundated with water in the winter. There are currently few records for the site, although we know redshank and lapwing have bred there in the last couple of years and a glossy ibis was there for a while a couple of years ago, but as part of the Potteric Carr buffer recording area it would be great to have some records on the blog.

To get there (from Potteric Carr car park) cross White Rose Way at the pedestrian crossings and follow the path south alongside the road in front of B&Q right down to junction 3, and turn right where the sign points into the wood. A path takes you to the screen. It’s about ¾ mile from Potteric.

Moth Trapping Report for Sunday Night, 3rd September

Maiden's blush (taken on 4th) - credit Derek Parker

Prolonged overnight rain and drizzle meant that the catch was very modest indeed, a mere 27 species. A single Red-green Carpet provided a distinctly autumnal feel; this is a species more usually seen in October or November. Eudonia angustea is another moth typically found in late autumn. Centre-barred Sallow, Canary-shouldered Thorn and Maiden’s Blush were among the other species recorded.
